CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:

In my class, I utilize a Clip Chart to manage and track student behavior.  Each day, every student starts out on "Ready to Learn".  Students following the rules and demonstrating excellent behavior will have the opportunity to "clip up".  If a student clips up three times to "Super Student", they get an award and a pass from the teacher of their choosing.

If a student is not following the rules, we will be following the new discipline policy outlined in the Student Handbook found on our school's website: Grades K-4 Discipline Approach  Each teacher, as a licensed professional, will evaluate the needs of each child in each class to determine the most effective approach to discipline for his/her particular students.    As a general guideline, the following steps will be in place:  1.  The teacher will give one verbal warning for the first infraction.   2. At the second warning, the teacher will discuss the behavior with the child.  3. At the third warning, a behavior notice will be documented in Educate, and parents will receive an email from Educate informing them of the behavior. 3. Three behavior notices in one trimester will result in direct verbal communication with the parent and a recess detention. Any behavior notice after the third one will result in an after school detention from 2:15pm -3pm in a designated classroom. 4. At any time during this process, the teacher may deem it necessary for the child to conference with the Principal to further assist the child in his/her decision-making process.

In tandem with the Clip Chart, our class participates in an activity called "Fun Friday" which takes place each Friday for about 40 minutes.  If a child has any unfinished work or missing assignments, they will be in "Ketchup" to catch up on their work.  If they have completed all of their work, they will have an opportunity to participate in the fun "Relish" activity for that week.  Any unfinished "Ketchup" work will be sent home as homework and expected to be completed over the weekend.

HOMEWORK EXPECATIONS:

Homework can be found in your child's STAR Binder each day.  Please go through your child's STAR Binder with them each night and empty out the applicable pockets.  Below are the homework expectations for 2nd grade students.

Math:
Students will have Math homework almost daily.  They are expected to complete their Math homework the night it is brought home and return it to class the following day.

Reading Minutes:
Second grade students are expected to read 100 minutes per week.  Their reading minutes should be recorded in their planners and initialed by a parent before they are checked each Monday.
